Dear ABO Board Members and ABO Community,

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Amha Belay, a globally respected pioneer in microalgae and a long-time leader within the algae community.

Dr. Belay devoted decades to advancing algae science and commercialization. He served as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Earthrise Nutritionals, helping lead large-scale spirulina cultivation and overseeing scientific, technical, quality, and regulatory efforts. He was also the Founder/CEO of Algae4All and was widely regarded as a pre-eminent expert in microalgae applications for food, feed, and nutraceuticals.

Within ABO, Dr. Belay served the organization as a member of the Board of Directors for many years. He was listed among ABO’s directors in ABO’s industry standards work (2017) and was re-elected to the Board in 2022 (noted as joining members serving a 2021–2023 term). Dr. Belay also served as the chairman on the ABO Food & Feed Committee.

We are grateful for Dr. Belay’s leadership, expertise, and steady commitment to the growth of the algae industry.
